Parade’s Timing Controller Chip Developed for AMOLED Panels Supports eDP 1.4b for Extended Battery Life
San Jose, Calif.— 21 April 2016 —Parade Technologies, Ltd. (Taiwan OTC: 4966.TWO), a leading video display, touch controller, and high-speed interface IC supplier, today announced a collaboration with Samsung Display to deliver AMOLED panels for the tablet and PC notebook markets. Parade, the leading supplier of eDP timing controllers (Tcons) for both tablet and PC notebook display panels, worked together with Samsung Display to developed the DP699 Tcon which is used exclusively in the new Samsung AMLOED panels. The DP699 supports the VESA Embedded DisplayPort (eDP) Standard version 1.4b and supports resolutions up to 3200×1800.
AMOLED displays offer high contrast and low power consumption, but until recently have been limited to phones, some tablets, and TVs. Through the joint development effort with Parade, Samsung has enabled AMOLED panels for the Windows PC market.
“Parade is a proven supplier of eDP Tcons,” said Won-jun Choe, Vice President, Samsung Display Corporation. “Parade brings the high-speed signal integrity expertise needed for robust and reliable display performance, as well as expertise in image processing, integration, and power management. Collaboration with Parade helped us accomplish the goal of launching new AMOLED panels with top-notch performance, minimum power consumption, and time to market.”
“We’re glad to be part of the solution enabling AMOLED panels into the PC market,” said Jimmy Chiu, Executive VP of Marketing at Parade Technologies. “We think Samsung’s introduction of AMOLED panels for PC notebooks is an important milestone in the PC industry, and we are honored to be chosen as a development partner by Samsung in this endeavor.”
The DP699 supports display resolutions up to 3200×1800 with 24-bit color, using up to four eDP lanes at a link rate up to 3.25 Gigabit/sec per lane. The device includes an internal frame buffer to support panel self-refresh (PSR), including partial-frame refresh as defined by PSR2 in eDP 1.4b. Adaptive Sync is also supported for gaming optimization, as well as the MBO (Media Buffer Optimization) function for video playback. The DP699 also includes a number of proprietary Samsung features and algorithms to optimize display quality, including those for optimum color, brightness, and dimming control. The panel-side COG (Chip-on-Glass) interface is configurable for various AMOLED panel topologies.
The DP699 is currently in production.
